DAY BY DAY

The Ancient Desert,
Unfolded.

Nine days through immense dunes, rhino country, desert rivers, the Atlantic coast and Etosha's waterholes.

DAY 01 WINDHOEK → SOSSUSVLEI

Into the
Oldest Desert.

Featured Accommodation: Wilderness Little Kulala

Arrive in Namibia, where you are met at Windhoek and welcomed by your Hammerkop representative.

Rather than beginning your safari with a long road journey, board a light aircraft for a spectacular flight southwest toward the Namib Desert.

The landscape slowly empties beneath you. Mountains become vast gravel plains. Gravel plains become sand. Then the enormous burnt-orange dunes of the Namib appear on the horizon.

Land near Sossusvlei and transfer to Wilderness Little Kulala, an intimate desert retreat overlooking one of the world's oldest landscapes.

There is no need to rush this afternoon. Settle into your suite before heading into the private wilderness reserve with your guide. Look for oryx, springbok, ostrich, jackal and other desert-adapted wildlife as the afternoon light transforms the mountains and dunes.

As sunset approaches, your guide finds a secluded viewpoint. A table has been prepared: cold drinks, Namibian canapes and an endless horizon. Your first African sunset.

DAY 02 SOSSUSVLEI & DEADVLEI

The Great Dunes
of Sossusvlei.

Featured Accommodation: Wilderness Little Kulala

Rise before dawn. Coffee and a light breakfast are served before you depart with your private guide toward the great dunes of Sossusvlei.

Arriving early transforms the experience. The first sunlight touches the tops of the dunes while the valleys remain in deep shadow. As the sun rises, the desert changes from dark crimson to brilliant orange.

Explore Sossusvlei, where some of the highest dunes on Earth surround ancient clay pans. Continue to extraordinary Deadvlei, where centuries-old camelthorn trees stand black against a white clay floor, surrounded by enormous orange dunes and an intensely blue Namibian sky.

Guests who wish may climb one of the surrounding dunes before descending into the pan.

Rather than rushing back to camp, Hammerkop arranges a private desert breakfast or brunch in a secluded location.

The afternoon is deliberately unhurried. Relax beside your private pool, explore the reserve by vehicle or e-bike, or simply watch the changing desert light.

Tonight, weather permitting, your bed can be prepared on your private rooftop. Sleep beneath the stars of the Namib.

DAY 03 SOSSUSVLEI → DAMARALAND

Into Rhino
Country.

Featured Accommodation: Wilderness Desert Rhino Camp

After breakfast, return to the airstrip. Today's flight is part of the safari.

Fly north across one of Africa's most extraordinary landscapes as the dunes of the Namib gradually give way to mountains, rocky escarpments and enormous dry river valleys.

Eventually you descend into the remote wilderness of Damaraland and Palmwag.

Your destination is Wilderness Desert Rhino Camp, a small camp created around one of Namibia's great conservation stories: protecting free-ranging desert-adapted black rhinoceros.

After lunch and time to settle into camp, head into the wilderness with your guide. The country appears empty at first. Look more carefully.

Hartmann's mountain zebra move across distant slopes. Oryx stand silhouetted against the mountains. Giraffe browse along dry riverbeds. Somewhere in this enormous landscape are elephant, brown hyena and black rhino.

End the afternoon on a rocky ridge with sundowners as the mountains turn copper and red.

DAY 04 DAMARALAND & PALMWAG

Walking With
Black Rhino.

Featured Accommodation: Wilderness Desert Rhino Camp

Wake before sunrise to coffee and a light breakfast before setting out with your private guide and specialist rhino trackers.

Today is devoted to one of the defining wildlife experiences of the journey: tracking free-ranging desert-adapted black rhinoceros.

The search begins by vehicle as your trackers read subtle signs in the landscape — a footprint in the sand, fresh dung, a broken branch or tracks crossing a dry riverbed.

When conditions allow, leave the vehicle behind and continue quietly on foot.

There are no fences and no predictable waterholes. These rhinoceros roam through an immense wilderness of mountains, gravel plains and dry valleys.

Encountering one here is not simply a wildlife sighting. It is an opportunity to understand how one of Africa's most threatened large mammals continues to survive in this extraordinary landscape — and the conservation work required to protect it.

After tracking, a Hammerkop bush lunch awaits in a secluded location. Return to camp for an unhurried afternoon before heading out again as the heat begins to fade.

Tonight, gather around the fire for dinner and stories of Damaraland's wildlife, communities and conservation.

DAY 05 DAMARALAND → HOANIB

Into the
Hoanib.

Featured Accommodation: Wilderness Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp

After breakfast, board your light aircraft and continue north into one of Namibia's wildest regions.

From the air, roads disappear. Below are mountains, dunes, gravel plains and ancient dry river systems stretching toward the horizon.

Land in the remote Hoanib wilderness and transfer to Wilderness Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp.

Set among dramatic desert scenery, Hoanib provides access to an ecosystem where wildlife has developed remarkable adaptations for survival.

After lunch, follow the ancient Hoanib riverbed with your private guide. Although the river may appear completely dry, moisture remains beneath the sand, sustaining ribbons of vegetation and creating vital corridors for wildlife.

This is the domain of Namibia's legendary desert-adapted elephants.

Search for family groups moving through the river valleys in pursuit of water and food. You may also encounter giraffe, oryx, springbok, jackal, brown hyena and, with exceptional fortune, desert-adapted lion.

As evening approaches, stop somewhere overlooking the immense wilderness for sundowners. Return to camp beneath a sky seemingly without end.

DAY 06 THE SKELETON COAST

Where the Desert
Meets the Sea.

Featured Accommodation: Wilderness Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp

Leave camp early for one of the great expedition days of the safari.

Travel westward through the Hoanib ecosystem toward the legendary Skeleton Coast.

The landscape changes constantly. Dry river valleys become gravel plains. Gravel plains become towering dunes. Gradually, cold Atlantic fog appears across the desert. Then, almost impossibly, the Namib reaches the ocean.

For centuries this coastline was feared by sailors. Powerful currents, fog and shifting sands claimed ships and left their remains scattered along one of the world's most remote shores.

Explore this extraordinary meeting place of desert and ocean, discovering dunes, geological formations, beaches and colonies of Cape fur seals. Watch jackals patrol the coastline while seabirds ride the Atlantic winds.

Then comes another Hammerkop surprise. A beautifully prepared lunch awaits overlooking the Atlantic.

Behind you lies one of the world's oldest deserts. Before you lies the ocean.

There are few places on Earth where wilderness feels more complete. Return toward Hoanib through the dunes and desert wilderness.

Tonight, enjoy your final dinner in this remarkable landscape.

DAY 07 HOANIB → ETOSHA

From Desert
to Etosha.

Featured Accommodation: Onguma Camp Kala

After breakfast, board your aircraft for the flight east toward Namibia's greatest concentration of wildlife.

From the air, the landscape changes again. The extreme desert gradually gives way to thornveld and open plains until the enormous pale expanse of Etosha appears.

Land and transfer to Onguma Camp Kala, an intimate luxury camp overlooking its own waterhole on the private Onguma reserve bordering Etosha National Park.

With only a handful of suites, Camp Kala provides exactly the privacy and sense of place suited to a Hammerkop journey.

After lunch, spend your first afternoon exploring the private reserve. Elephants, giraffe, zebra and antelope may gather around the waterholes while predators move through the surrounding bush.

There is no need to rush. Return to camp before sunset and settle onto the deck with a drink.

Sometimes the best safari requires going nowhere at all. Allow Africa to come to you.

DAY 08 ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK

Africa at
the Waterhole.

Featured Accommodation: Onguma Camp Kala

Wake before sunrise. After coffee and a light breakfast, depart with your private guide for a full-day safari into Etosha National Park.

Etosha is different from the desert landscapes through which you have travelled. Here, water determines almost everything.

During the dry season, animals converge around permanent and seasonal waterholes, creating some of southern Africa's most compelling wildlife viewing.

Look for lion, leopard, cheetah, black rhinoceros, elephant, giraffe, zebra, blue wildebeest, oryx, kudu, springbok and black-faced impala.

But the Hammerkop approach is not about racing between sightings. Find a productive waterhole. Switch off the engine. Wait.

Zebra arrive first. Springbok gather cautiously. A giraffe approaches slowly, spreading its legs to drink. An elephant herd emerges from the dust. Then everything suddenly becomes still. Heads rise. Eyes turn toward the bush. A predator may be approaching.

This is the ancient rhythm of Etosha.

Enjoy a carefully prepared safari lunch before continuing through the afternoon.

Return to Onguma as the sun sinks toward the horizon. Tonight, Hammerkop hosts a private farewell dinner beneath the African sky — firelight, lanterns, Namibian wine and the sounds of the African night.

DAY 09 ETOSHA → WINDHOEK

The Last
Waterhole.

Featured Accommodation: Departure Day

There is no need for an early departure from Africa.

Wake before sunrise and enjoy coffee overlooking the waterhole. Sit quietly.

Perhaps elephants arrive. Perhaps giraffe. Perhaps zebra. Perhaps a rhinoceros makes one final appearance. Or perhaps there is nothing at all except birdsong, sunrise and the immense Namibian sky.

That uncertainty is part of safari.

After breakfast, transfer to the airstrip and board your light aircraft for the flight to Windhoek.

Below you, Namibia unfolds one final time — salt pans, mountains, dry riverbeds and desert stretching toward the horizon.

On arrival in Windhoek, connect with your onward international flight.

Your journey through Namibia ends. But the silence, landscapes and wildlife of this ancient country remain.
