Africa Beyond
the Familiar
A signature expedition into one of Africa's least explored safari frontiers.
Africa Beyond
the Familiar.
Angola should be one of Hammerkop's most distinctive journeys: not a conventional Big Five safari, but an expedition into an African wilderness that is still being rediscovered.
Here, the Namib Desert falls toward an empty Atlantic coastline. Elephants move through remote southeastern wilderness connected to the great Okavango system. Giant waterfalls thunder through tropical forest. Ancient rock formations rise unexpectedly from the savanna.
For Hammerkop, that is precisely the attraction.
Namib
Desert landscapes falling toward Angola's remote Atlantic coastline.
Iona
A remote wilderness shaped by desert, mountains and vast open country.
Okavango
Headwaters
Remote southeastern wilderness connected to the greater Okavango system.
Kalandula
One of Angola's great natural landmarks, where immense waterfalls meet tropical forest.
Africa Beyond the Familiar,
Unfolded.
Arrive in Angola
Arrive at Quatro de Fevereiro International Airport, where your Hammerkop representative welcomes you to Angola.
Transfer to one of Luanda's finest hotels for a relaxed first evening overlooking the Atlantic. The emphasis today is deliberately simple: recover from the international flight, enjoy an excellent dinner and prepare for the wilderness ahead.
Your private guide introduces the story of Angola - its Portuguese and African heritage, decades of isolation, extraordinary landscapes and the conservation renaissance now underway.
Into the Angolan Wilderness
After breakfast, fly south toward Namibe. From the air, Angola begins revealing itself: mountains, escarpments and immense stretches of virtually uninhabited country.
Continue toward the desert landscapes of southwestern Angola. This is where the Hammerkop Angola safari truly begins.
Set where the Namibe Desert reaches the Atlantic, the lodge provides a remote base for exploring an exceptionally wild stretch of coast.
Explore the desert coastline by 4x4 before returning for sundowners overlooking the Atlantic.
Where the Desert Meets the Sea
Wake to the sound of the Atlantic. Today is intentionally unhurried.
Travel along beaches where desert cliffs tumble toward the ocean and human footprints are scarce. Depending upon conditions, experiences may include 4x4 coastal exploration, desert walks, marine-wildlife viewing, remote beach picnics and photography.
A private desert picnic overlooking the Atlantic. No safari vehicles gathering around a sighting. No lodge lights on the horizon. Only desert, ocean and sky.
Into Iona
Enter one of Angola's greatest wilderness landscapes. Iona protects an extraordinary transition between the Namib Desert, rugged mountains and Atlantic-influenced ecosystems.
Wildlife is recovering here after decades of pressure, making Iona particularly compelling for travelers fascinated by conservation and wilderness rather than simply wildlife checklists.
Travel by expedition vehicle deep into the park.
Spacious expedition tents, proper beds, private bathrooms, fine linens, lantern-lit dinners and outstanding guiding. Luxury comes from where you are, not marble bathrooms.
Iona: An Ancient Desert
Rise before sunrise for a full day exploring Iona. Search for desert-adapted wildlife while discovering a landscape shaped by wind, geology and millions of years of climatic change.
Walk through dry riverbeds, study tracks in the sand, explore rocky escarpments and encounter communities whose lives have been shaped by this harsh environment.
The Ancient Desert Sundowner - a discreet Hammerkop bar appears among the rocks as the mountains turn copper and the desert disappears into darkness.
Desert to Highlands
Leave the desert and journey toward the spectacular Angolan highlands. The landscapes become greener, cooler and increasingly mountainous as you approach Lubango and the great escarpment.
Explore Serra da Leba, one of Angola's most recognizable landscapes, before continuing to your lodge.
Private sunset cocktails overlooking the escarpment.
Into the Okavango's Secret Source
Fly by private charter toward southeastern Angola and the wilderness of Cuando Cubango.
Few travelers realize that the waters eventually spreading across Botswana's celebrated Okavango Delta begin their journey in Angola. The region contains miombo forests, wetlands, rivers, floodplains and wildlife corridors extending across southern Africa.
Arrive at an intimate mobile camp overlooking one of the river systems feeding the Okavango.
First exploration by boat or vehicle depending upon location and seasonal water conditions.
Luengue-Luiana
Explore the immense wilderness landscapes associated with Luengue-Luiana and southeastern Angola.
Elephants move through this transboundary ecosystem, while Angola's southeastern wilderness forms part of a much larger ecological system extending toward Botswana, Namibia and Zambia.
Morning wildlife drive, bush breakfast beside the river, tracking with specialist guides, birding along wetlands and afternoon river exploration where conditions permit.
Dinner at the Source - a lantern-lit table beside waters beginning their remarkable journey toward the Okavango Delta.
The Wild Heart of Angola
A second full day allows guests to slow down. There is no predetermined checklist.
Follow tracks. Watch elephants. Stop for birds. Walk through miombo woodland. Explore floodplains. Spend an hour watching a single herd rather than racing toward another sighting.
The wilderness determines the day.
Sundowners somewhere no other safari vehicle is likely to appear.
Waterfalls of Angola
Private charter north toward Malanje. Angola changes character yet again.
Continue toward Kalandula Falls, one of the country's great natural spectacles, where water crashes over an immense horseshoe-shaped escarpment surrounded by luxuriant vegetation.
Hammerkop arranges a private guided exploration from several perspectives rather than simply stopping at the main viewpoint.
Private sundowners overlooking Kalandula as the afternoon light catches the mist, followed by dinner with the distant sound of falling water.
Pedras Negras
Travel toward the extraordinary black-rock formations of Pedras Negras de Pungo Andongo. Massive monoliths rise unexpectedly from the surrounding landscape.
Explore the formations on foot with a specialist guide while learning about the Kingdom of Ndongo and the stories surrounding Queen Njinga. Lunch is prepared privately among the landscapes before continuing toward your final overnight.
A farewell dinner celebrating the journey from Atlantic desert to Okavango wilderness.
Return to Luanda
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast. Depending upon flight schedules, explore the estate before transferring to Luanda for your international departure.
Your journey across one of Africa's least explored countries comes to an end. But Angola has a habit of remaining with you.
The best souvenir is a Hammerkop Safari.
