The Great Rift
to the Indian Ocean
Here, one of Africa's great wilderness landscapes reaches south through the Great Rift Valley before the journey ultimately meets the warm Indian Ocean.
From the Great Rift
to the Indian Ocean.
Mozambique gives Hammerkop an opportunity to create something quite different from the classic safari circuits of Botswana and Namibia.
This journey is built around two exceptional ecosystems: the recovering wilderness of Gorongosa National Park and the islands and marine wilderness of the Bazaruto Archipelago.
The result is an intimate expedition combining elephants, lions, floodplains, ancient forests, walking safaris and conservation with deserted beaches, traditional dhows, coral reefs and the possibility of encountering dolphins, turtles, whale sharks and the rare dugong.
Travel slowly. Go deeper. Stay somewhere remarkable. Let the landscape tell the story.

From Wilderness
to Ocean.
Into the Great
African Rift
Arrive in Mozambique and continue by scheduled or private air connection toward Gorongosa National Park. The transition is important: cities disappear, roads become tracks, and mountains rise beyond vast floodplains.
Your Hammerkop guide meets you on arrival and introduces the landscape slowly rather than rushing immediately into a checklist of animals.
Featured Accommodation — Muzimu Lodge. Set beside the Mussicadzi River, Muzimu has just six raised East African-style tented suites, giving the property the intimacy that suits Hammerkop particularly well.
Settle into your tent, listen to the bush, then head out for your first exploratory drive before stopping somewhere overlooking the wilderness for the first Hammerkop Sundowner. Dinner follows beneath the African night sky.
The Wildlife
of Gorongosa
Wake before sunrise as coffee arrives and the wilderness begins to stir. Today is devoted to discovering one of Africa's most remarkable recovering ecosystems.
Elephants move through woodland. Waterbuck gather across enormous floodplains. Lions patrol the grasslands. Buffalo, hippo, crocodile, wildebeest and zebra inhabit the park, while Gorongosa's mixture of wetlands, savannah and forest produces exceptional birdlife.
Your private Hammerkop vehicle allows the morning to unfold naturally. There is no race back to camp. When something interesting happens, you stay.
A bush breakfast can be arranged somewhere beautiful before continuing the drive. Return to Muzimu during the heat of the afternoon, then venture out again as the light softens. The day concludes around the fire with drinks and stories from the bush.
Walking the
Old Africa
Today the vehicle stays behind for part of the morning. Accompanied by an experienced walking guide, enter the landscape on foot.
Tracks suddenly matter. A broken branch tells a story. Dung reveals when elephants passed. Alarm calls announce predators you cannot yet see.
Walking changes the scale of a safari. Instead of observing Africa through a vehicle, guests become temporary participants in the landscape.
Return for lunch and an afternoon at leisure. Late afternoon brings another private wildlife drive. Tonight, Hammerkop arranges an intimate bush dinner beneath the stars, where possible.
Water, Floodplains
& Conservation
Today explores another side of Gorongosa. The Urema ecosystem creates immense seasonal floodplains attracting remarkable concentrations of wildlife.
Depending upon conditions, explore waterways and wetlands before continuing across the plains. But Gorongosa's greatest story may not simply be its wildlife — it is the return of the wilderness itself.
Guests have an opportunity to learn about the conservation, scientific research and community programs behind the restoration of this ecosystem. For Hammerkop, this becomes an important element of the journey: Safari should leave wilderness stronger than we found it.
Enjoy a final evening beside the Mussicadzi River.
Deeper into
Gorongosa
After breakfast, leave Muzimu and travel deeper into the park. Your destination is deliberately wilder.
Featured Accommodation — Chicari Camp. Chicari is positioned overlooking a permanent pan surrounded by fever trees and woodland. Wildlife comes to you.
The camp contains only ten safari tents, including two distinctive Treehide Tents, and every tent has its own deck overlooking the pan. This is precisely the sort of camp that belongs in the Hammerkop collection — not because it is ostentatious, but because its location creates the luxury.
Spend the afternoon watching animals approach the water before departing on an evening game drive. Return after sunset for dinner beside the wilderness.
A Day Without
a Clock
There is deliberately little fixed programming today. This is the Hammerkop idea of luxury: time.
If lions were located yesterday, follow them. If elephants appear at the pan, stay and watch. If the morning light is extraordinary, stop for photography.
Head into the bush before sunrise with coffee and breakfast packed into the vehicle. Spend several hours exploring, then return to Chicari for lunch and a long afternoon watching wildlife from camp.
The final evening drive ends with sundowners somewhere completely alone. As darkness falls, return to camp for your last dinner in Gorongosa.
From Lions to
the Indian Ocean
One final early-morning drive, followed by breakfast. Then fly south toward Vilanculos and the Bazaruto Archipelago.
Below the aircraft, the African bush gradually gives way to one of the most beautiful coastlines on the continent. Sandbars appear. Then turquoise water. Then islands.
Featured Accommodation — Kisawa Sanctuary. Kisawa occupies approximately 300 hectares of forest, beach and dunes on the southern end of Benguerra Island. Its residences are deliberately spread across the landscape to provide exceptional privacy.
After six days in the bush, remove your shoes. The second safari begins.
The Marine
Safari
Safari does not end at Africa's shoreline. It simply changes form.
Today you explore Bazaruto National Marine Park. Snorkel above coral reefs. Cruise between islands. Watch for dolphins. Depending upon season and conditions, the waters may reveal turtles, rays, whale sharks and other marine life.
And somewhere beneath these waters survives one of Africa's most unusual large mammals: the dugong.
Return to Kisawa for an afternoon beside your private pool. Dinner tonight can be somewhere completely private beside the Indian Ocean.
Dhows, Dunes &
the Old Indian Ocean
Your final full day celebrates Mozambique itself. For centuries this coastline connected African communities with sailors and merchants travelling the Indian Ocean. That history remains visible in Mozambique's food, architecture, boats and coastal culture.
Today can be as active — or inactive — as you wish. Explore Benguerra's dunes. Ride along the beach. Snorkel. Visit another island. Or simply disappear onto an empty stretch of sand.
Late in the afternoon, board a traditional-style dhow. Sail quietly as the sun drops toward Africa. Champagne is served aboard. Behind you lies the Indian Ocean. Ahead lies the African continent.
Tonight, a private farewell dinner celebrates the final evening.
The Best
Souvenir
Wake naturally and enjoy breakfast overlooking the Indian Ocean. There is time for one last swim before your transfer to Vilanculos and onward international connections.
You leave Mozambique with no single defining image. Perhaps it will be an elephant emerging through Gorongosa's woodland, a lion crossing the floodplain, the sound of something moving outside your tent, bare footprints along an empty beach, or a dhow silhouetted against the setting sun.
Those moments become the souvenir.
